Why traveling during this holiday is one of the best times to travel!
When I was living in Italy, we didn’t have any family there and decided to travel during Thanksgiving. I found that traveling during this holiday was one of my favorite experiences. Since then I haven’t looked back. It is traditionally a time for gathering with family and friends, sharing meals, and reflecting on what we’re thankful for. However, it can also be the perfect opportunity to embark on an international adventure. Here’s why I think traveling abroad during Thanksgiving can be the best time to explore the world.
Beat the Crowds
While domestic travel peaks during Thanksgiving, international destinations often see a dip in tourist numbers. This means you can enjoy popular sights, museums, and attractions without the usual hustle and bustle. Imagine having iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum, or the Great Wall of China with a reduced crowd than during peak travel season. The reduced crowd sizes allow for a more relaxed and immersive experience.
Off-Season Advantages
In many parts of the world, late November falls into the shoulder or off-season. This can translate to significant savings on flights and accommodations. Hotels and airlines often offer discounted rates to fill their rooms and seats, making it a budget-friendly time to travel. My first visit to New Zealand was over Thanksgiving a few years back, which was late spring there. Additionally, cooler weather in destinations like Europe and Asia can be more comfortable for sightseeing compared to the summer heat.
Use Less Vacation Time
For many Americans you will have the day off for the Thanksgiving holiday. For another select few, you will receive the day after Thanksgiving off as well. If you time your trip right, you could leave on the Friday before thanksgiving, and return on the Sunday after and only use about 3-4 days of personal leave.
Escape the Holiday Stress
For a lot of us, the pressures and expectations of Thanksgiving can be overwhelming. Traveling abroad offers a refreshing break from the usual holiday routine. Instead of cooking for hours, cleaning, and winding up in a food coma, you can enjoy being a guest in another country, savoring local cuisine and letting someone else do the work. I’ve often found since I started traveling during this time that I spent more time working than actually relaxing, all for some unneeded calories and stress.
Create Unforgettable Memories
An international Thanksgiving trip can become a cherished tradition. Whether you're exploring new destinations solo, with family, or with friends, the shared experiences and adventures create lasting memories. From savoring a Thanksgiving meal in a new setting to discovering hidden gems and local customs, these moments become stories you’ll share for years to come.
Experience Thanksgiving Abroad
Many international destinations, particularly those popular with American expatriates and tourists, offer special Thanksgiving events and meals. Restaurants in cities like Paris, London, and Tokyo often serve traditional Thanksgiving dinners, allowing you to enjoy the holiday’s familiar flavors in an exotic locale. It’s a wonderful blend of the familiar and the foreign.

So, this Thanksgiving, consider packing your bags and setting off on an international journey—you might just discover that it's the best time to travel.
